192.com: Officially Directory of the Year
192.com has scooped the Directory of the year Award (consumer) at the 2007 Data Publishers Association (DPA) Awards - the first time an online directory has beaten a traditional printed directory to win the award.
With a record number of entries across the board this year, 192.com won its category because "It (192.com) demonstrated cutting edge innovation with highly customised search techniques and has a hugely impressive market share among strong and embedded competition," said Jenny Moseley, of Op-4, chairperson of the judges.
As part of its award submission 192 stated, "We compete with the UK's biggest brands within each of the people, business and place categories but no other site gives consumers information on all three of these. 192.com's success is purely down to continuous innovation and superior product development rather than large marketing expenditure. Word of mouth (most recently on our maps) continues to be the single biggest driver of traffic to our site."
Alastair Crawford, CEO of 192.com who was there to collect the award commented, "This is a tremendous result for 192.com. Not only is it the first time we've won this award, but it is the first time an online directory has secured it. This is a massive endorsement of our site and demonstrates the many benefits of online publishing over traditional print. A characteristic that will be further proven by the range of innovative new features we will be adding to the site over the next few months."
