Refused hire due to their typing error.
I pre-booked with Avis for a very important trip. When I arrived at the location I was told by a very unfriendly agent that they had to run a security check, which they then told me I had failed. They were very abrupt and refused to explain why I failed the... Read more check. When I later emailed Avis security department to enquire about this I was told that it was down to a typing error when the agent had entered my name in the system. Having caused me a great amount of problems being without a car, all they offered me was a free upgrade at my next booking (which is something that is easy to obtain anyway). I asked for a more authentic apology so my request was forwarded to Avis customer service but I have never received a response, despite sending another email several weeks later. Show less
I arrived at Avis via an online broker which gave me the cheapest offer for Cambridge.
The troubles began right after booking online: the voucher said that I had to bring a distressing amount of paperwork to identify myself: bank statements, utility bills (!!) and other identifying letters and... Read more documents. Otherwise, they might refuse giving me the car without a refund. As I don't live in the UK long-term, I didn't have those on me! When I called the employee at Avis Cambridge, she told me to just "bring as much documents and letters confirming who you are as you can" - but without guaranteeing me that I'd actually get the car that I had already paid for, as long as I didn't bring utility bills.
That's right. This business tells customers that they may not get what they pay for upon arrival - and no refund either.
I bothered a lot of people to get as much identity confirming documents (ID, passport, driving license was allegedly not enough) and in the end came up with a decent stack. When I arrived there, the lady (I think the same who I talked to on the phone) didn't even look at them!
When I got the car, I was asked to sign a sheet that claimed that the car had NO scratches or flaws on it WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE CAR FIRST. "Because it's dark outside". I went to look with a flashlight anyway, and there was a fairly big scratch on the back of the car.
Now the worst: I got a bill of additional 65 Pounds (for a 24h rental) with a bogus fuel charge and a bogus city supplement. I had filled the car up 100% before returning it, but the display didn't show it (such a disfunction should be known by good employees). So they charged me apparently without first bringing the car to the gas station and actually realizing that it was full. But two weeks later, no correction came either. I called to explain the mistake, and the gentleman on the phone - much unlike his colleague on-site - was very kind and immediately cancelled the charge. Show less
